Alkyl Aryl Sulfonic Acids (AASA)

Alkyl Aryl Sulfonic Acids (AASA) are produced primarily from the sulfonation of heavy alkylates. Heavy alkylates are normally rich in dialkylbenzene (2 alkyl chains). As such the resulting sulfonic acids (AASA) are typically in the Molecular Weight (MW) range of 390-480. The MW of each AASA type is determined by the MW of the particular heavy alkylate feedstock used.

AASAs can be used “as-is” but are usually used as an intermediate for the production of neutral and overbased metal sulfonates. Calcium, sodium and barium salts are common examples. These are often used in additive manufacture and applications. 

We also have complimentary speciality alkyl aromatic sulfonic acids (e.g. based on alkyl toluenes or long chain mono-alkylbenzenes, etc.).

[AASA is distinct from LABSA which is produced from the sulfonation of (mono-) linear alkyl benzene and is primarily used as a detergent feedstock].
